LPG Autogas is firmly established in Australia as the most popular and widely accepted alternative fuel for motor vehicles.

There are a large number of Autogas-powered motor vehicles on Australian roads. More than 600,000 Australian motorists run their vehicles on Autogas. 15,000 taxis in Australia enjoy the cost savings of Autogas use. Best of all, because the vehicle has already been converted to run on Autogas, you can start saving straight away!

Autogas reduces engine wear, enhancing the reliability of used LPG-powered motor vehicles. There are several reasons for this:

  • In cold starting the vehicle does not require a choke cycle to warm up.
  • In addition Autogas does not wash the protective lubricant from cylinder walls.
  • Autogas significantly reduces the build-up of carbon on internal engine components, reducing engine wear.

As a result Autogas-powered vehicles require:

  • Fewer oil and filter changes
  • Have longer exhaust system life
  • And cleaner spark plugs that require replacement less often

Autogas-powered used motor vehicles are also very safe. The design and installation of systems sold in this country are governed by what are considered the most stringent regulations in the world.

Modern Autogas engine systems are designed to be safe in use, safe to repair and safe in a vehicle accident. All LPG tanks are rigorously tested and much stronger than conventional petrol tanks. In a crash, they can withstand enormous impact forces without deforming.

Other mandated safety features include:

  • Two electronically controlled shut-off solenoids (on cylinder and under bonnet) which stop the flow of gas to the engine if the engine stops for any reason
  • Pressure relief valves for the tank and the system, to prevent any pressure build up that may damage the system, or be hazardous
  • Double back-check valves to ensure gas tight filling
  • Sealed compartments and venting around valves and pipe-work to ensure no LPG enters the interior of the vehicle.

When shopping for a used Autogas-powered vehicle you should consider whether you require a dual-fuel or dedicated Autogas-only system. Dual-fuel systems allow the vehicle to operate on either LPG or unleaded petrol. This could almost double the vehicles range. The petrol tank still remains in the car and the driver can switch from gas to petrol or vice-versa.

Dedicated Autogas systems are an advantage if you want to ensure drivers always fill up with inexpensive Autogas for half the cost or less of petrol, thereby controlling ongoing costs.
